Provide a variety of geologic services, with a focus on natural hazards. I perform geohazard site investigations using high-resolution LiDAR and aerial imagery in GIS to map landslides that may pose a threat to the integrity of natural gas and products pipelines. These desktop-based investigations are followed by field-based assessments characterizing the spatial extent and severity of slope anomalies using Eos Arrow and Trimble R1 GPS, Collector, Field Maps, and Survey 123. I also provide support in composing summary reports and proposals for these projects.

Teach an online, undergraduate course titled Watershed Processes during the winter terms. This course focuses on the water budget, dissecting a different component each week in the context of a natural environment. I create weekly videos and lecture summaries to provide varied learning opportunities for students, and also manage the Canvas site, mediated discussions, and graded all assessments. I supervised an intern by collaborating with her to create a new lab component and provided feedback on her work. The new lab component allows for each student to learn more about their local watershed with an online hydrologic model and encouraged students to explore the impacts of land use change, asking them to reflect on the history of the area of study on multi-century timescales.

Provided interpretive programs (11 self-developed offerings) and visitor services during the summer seasons. Through programming and visitor interactions, I translated complex, technical, and scientific terms and concepts related to geology, hydrology, glaciation, climate change, and plant and animal ecology into easily understandable terms for diverse audiences including children, seniors, and domestic and international visitors. Within the interpretation work group, I served as the media and technical assistance manager and created signage using the Adobe Creative Suite for bulletin cases and visitor center displays, set up AV equipment, and contributed to the park’s social media platforms. I also contributed to the Glacier National Park Resource Guide, a 300-page book that outlines the natural and cultural history of the park, by writing the chapter on hydrology, and excerpts focused on lesser known fossils in the park and vegetation growth in avalanche chutes.

Researched, developed, and presented virtual educational lessons over Zoom for students participating in 4-H programming.I designed a hydrology program for high schoolers and incorporated guest speakers from across New York to talk with the students about research and career exploration in the water resources field. I also created several asynchronous learning packets focused on local public lands and geology to encourage outdoor exploration and learning during Covid.

Served as the teaching assistant for hydrology and water policy courses and conducted forest hydrology research as a research assistant. I was the teaching assistant for two courses: Watershed Processes (upper undergraduate and graduate) and Sociotechnical Aspects of Water Resources (graduate). For the former I executed weekly labs including field-based labs focused on measuring streamflow and infiltration capacity, and indoor labs calculating evapotranspiration, discharge, and hydrograph separation. I also taught lectures focused on infiltration, precipitation, and groundwater and managed online discussion boards. For the later, I facilitated water policy and management discussions and managed two labs focused on calculating evapotranspiration and discharge.As a graduate research assistant, I assessed daily and 15-minute resolution hydrologic data from the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, a Long-Term Ecological Research site, in order to explore long-term trends in annual runoff coefficients across ten small watersheds in the Cascade Mountains. Using Python and GIS I explored climatological and physically drivers of changes in streamflow and to assess a watershed’s ability to buffer climatic changes. I presented results at the 2018 AGU Fall Meeting in Washington D.C. and the 2018 Joint Conference of Forests and Water in Valdivia, Chile.In addition to my main research project, I also deployed an ISCO sampler to collect daily water isotope samples for a one-year period and organized a schedule with several undergraduate research assistants to retrieve the samples every other week.

Provided interpretive programs and visitor services during the summer season. I researched, developed, and presented eight interpretive programs. These programs linked tangible resources to intangible meanings and universal concepts creating opportunities for visitors to make intellectual and emotional connections to the park. I also staffed two high traffic visitor centers (one million visitors in one month) answering repetitive questions, providing orientation information and trip planning advice, and where appropriate, providing informal interpretation to park visitors including providing brochures or other materials on topics of interest.

Avondale, Pennsylvania

Taught K-12 stream study programs and designed exhibits for the research center. (Student Conservation Association and AmeriCorps Position). Stream programming included topics such as macroinvertebrate bioassessment, water chemistry, sustainable building design, stream habitat assessment, and stream and watershed ecology. The school groups ranged in size from 20 to 150 students per day. I also tabled at multiple conferences and spoke to interested teachers about the importance of hands on, outdoor education, and described programming available at the Stroud Center. I collaborated with educators from the University of Wisconsin Extension to produce a paper analyzing data from a 2015 study on the effectiveness, status, and needs of environmental education centers in Wisconsin. Using the Adobe Creative Suite, I designed and produced education materials such as a dichotomous key for macroinvertebrate identification, wayside panels for inside and outside of the center, and an interactive “bug board” identification board. I created an informational, interpretive video about caddisfly research at the center.

Delivered interpretive programs (largely focused on geology), designed brochures, and participated in fundraising and citizen science events. (Student Conservation Association and AmeriCorps Position). I facilitated, developed, and/or presented interpretive programs including guided hikes focused on regional geology, fossils, astronomy, and karst formation. I staffed the Nature Center and interpreted the regional geology and ecology, and provided orientation information to visitors and set up pop up talks focused on fossil formation. I designed and constructed seasonal displays for the Nature Center as well as bulletin cases within campgrounds and a popular overlook in the park. I assisted in the installation of a local art show and assisted in the care of 750 native plants, created promotional materials, and staffed a Native Plant Sale. I also performed field research on ongoing Citizen Science projects including Project NestWatch, Project BudBurst, and Project FeederWatch.

Senior Thesis/ Volcanology Researcher:• Traveled to Dominica and assisted in collecting over 500 pounds of rock samples and water samples from 70 streams across the island to be used for analyses of water quality, stable isotopes, geochemistry, and petrography to assess eruption triggers and volcanic hazard risk.• Presented results at the 2015 Annual Northeastern Section GSA Meeting in Carroll, NH.Independent Study/ Geochemistry Researcher:• Developed a methodology and sampled stable oxygen isotopes at an intra-annual resolution from a tropical tree core from Central Africa Republic to determine if this species of tree could serve as a climate proxy.
