About Emily Garza
Dynamic M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling graduate with a strong passion for reducing stigma surrounding mental illness, increasing accessibility in mental healthcare, and exploring the applications of data science in healthcare. I'm actively working towards licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Illinois.My most recent experience at Above and Beyond Family Recovery Center has given me in-depth experience in using a client-centered, harm reduction approach to treating substance use as I facilitated Trauma process groups, took notes for REBT psychoeducation groups, and had regular 1:1 sessions with my clients as they worked towards their goals. As a counselor at IIT's Student Health and Wellness Center, I've gained experience working with students from a diverse array of backgrounds and utilized concepts from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), and exposure and response prevention (ERP) in my work with clients to help them achieve their goals. My empathetic, trauma-informed, and client-centered approach has helped me build a therapeutic relationship with the diverse array of cases I've encountered across my internship experiences. As I continue to gain experience in the mental health counseling field, I hope to work more with LGBTQ+ clients and develop my skills and knowledge to specialize in OCD and Anxiety disorders.My previous work as a Data Analyst at Northwestern and a Graduate Assistant at IIT have honed my skills in project management and data analysis. These roles provided unique opportunities to engage with Chicago communities and examine how historical context, public health, and public policy impact the lives of community members. This experience has served me well in my counseling roles because it provided me with the skills to provide reasonable structure to treatment plans, quickly adapt to new case management software, and contextualize research that can inform assessment and treatment with clients.
