Profile bio

About Emily Kelly

I completed my Bachelor of Arts (honours) degree in Sociology and Disability Studies at Carleton University last spring with high distinction. With a passion for supporting post-secondary students with disabilities in higher education and a keen interest to develop the knowledge and capacities to best support this growing cohort of students, I began my Master of Education (M.Ed) degree in the Studies in Teaching and Learning stream at the University of Ottawa this Fall. Several months later, I am in the final stages of my program and expected to graduate at the end of July. While my studies have provided the theoretical and practical applications of sociological ways of knowing, critical disability perspectives, and adult teaching principles, I have also been gaining invaluable work experience in various departments at Carleton University and in the local disability community. Namely, through guidance and mentorship from my colleagues at the Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities (PMC), I have developed the skills necessary to exceed expectations in delivering compassionate client-services and learning strategies support. Additionally, I am proud to sit on the board of directors with the Learning Disabilities Association of Ottawa Carleton (LDAO-C), supporting their programming initiatives for youth transitioning from high school to post-secondary studies and the workforce. In both roles, I use a client-centered, strength-based approach to assess the needs of clients and the organization at large to deliver efficient, effective, and culturally responsive supports and services. My interests include student success in higher education, particularly for undergraduate students with disabilities such as mental health, learning disabilities, ASD, and ADHD. Informed by my ongoing dedication to research and professional development, work experience, and lived experience, I take pride in my dedication to supporting students with disabilities to achieve their full potential in the post-secondary setting. My studies at the University of Ottawa have further piqued my interest in program planning, development, facilitation, and review which I hope to explore in the professional realm in the near future.
