About Emily Anderson

Hailing from the English countryside, Emily is an award-winning filmmaker who started directing videos while studying Sculpture and being the artist-in-residence for the Scottish Claymores, an NFL team based in Glasgow. As Ogilvy’s first female in-house director, she spent eight years writing, producing, and directing documentaries, collaborating with global brands that sent her all over the world — from reporting on the top of an Icelandic glacier to filming big wave surfers in Mexico, to interviewing a Russian Oligarch who’s bodyguard stood behind her with a gun. And that’s when she decided to get into comedy and commercials. She has shot campaigns for major clients including Adidas, Ford, Holiday Inn, IBM, Microsoft, Patagonia, Spotify, and Walgreens, to name a few.A genuine people person with an infectious personality and unique view of the world, Emily captures life with authenticity, absurdity, and color. Her work has garnered nominations and awards including winning the Next Exposure Grant at the Hamptons International Film Festival and being a SHOOT ‘New Director to Watch’ for her big wave surf film. When she’s not in production, Emily’s deck-handing on a commercial fishing boat, a hundred miles out at sea, getting paid in lobster.  Always looking for directing opportunities, freelance creative director projects, and brands to collaborate with. Please get in touch!_ _ _ Key areas of expertise: director, creative director, cinematographer, script and copywriter, art director, animator, editor, and colorist. Content I make: tv commercials, branded content, documentaries, stop-motion animation and social media videos.

  • Theusual
    Founder & Creative Director
    Theusual Jun 2011 - Aug 2020
    New York | Montauk
'The Usual' began as a collectible surf and lifestyle magazine helping put Montauk, New York’s easternmost surf town, on the map. Co-founded The Usual with my best friend and best creative partner ever, Yasha Wallin. It started as 'A love letter to Montauk' (where we live) as a broadsheet, given away free at supporting venues in the USA, Europe, and Japan, ushering in a new wave of NYC surfing magazines. Due to its quick success, my creative partner and I grew 'The Usual' into a boutique creative agency, partnering with brands to build communities and create unique print magazines and digital content. Partnered with a luxury hotel chain to become publisher, which allowed the mag to stay ad-free while being placed in venues and the bedrooms of our target demographic.Set the editorial agenda and visual direction for the issues, selecting interviewees and stories, and identifying contributors while remaining on budget. The highlight was being trusted by Patagonia to create a newsprint magazine series, each issue focusing on a different area of the brand — snowsports, climbing, and the environment — that was sent as mailers and available in every Patagonia store, all over the world.CLIENTS: Edition Hotels, King + Grove Hotels, J. Crew, LA MoCA, Mercedes, Metallica, Mike D, Patagonia, Red Bull, Toms Shoes
