I provide interim and ongoing editorial direction for alumni magazines, as well as editorial consulting on redesigns. I directed the college’s flagship, general-interest quarterly, Amherst magazine. It won several national awards and was a finalist for the Sibley Award during my tenure. "[Amherst magazine] delivers writing and design that consistently reach newsstand quality," said one CASE judging panel. "Of all the magazines we reviewed, we thought it had the most general interest appeal," said another.In addition to my work on the magazine, I served on the senior leadership team in the communications division, led the division's DEI work, served on numerous hiring committees, directly supervised two other editors, and ran the weekly editorial meeting.

My profile of the whistleblower in the John Walker Lindh case became required reading for a course at Harvard’s Kennedy School. I was part of the team that won the 2002 Sibley Award. When I left the magazine to go to Amherst, my boss wrote in his editor’s letter that I was a "sensitive, steady colleague" who led by example and that my stories “were without exception sharply reported, thoughtfully written, and like the sections of the magazine she edited, always turned in on time.”

As a town reporter at this Pulitzer Prize-winning daily, I learned to write quickly and to generate ideas–necessary skills when your job is to file ten stories a week on a daily deadline.

Working at a small weekly meant that I got to cover some really important stories in my first year out of college, including a capital murder trial and, separately, a deadly shooting that became international news (the Susan Cummings case). My reporting won a Virginia Press Association award.
