About Emily Hanning
I am passionate about leveraging the power of business to drive positive change to address social and environmental challenges – whether at the micro level in my family-run business or at a larger scale within publicly traded corporations. For more than ten years, I led sustainability and corporate responsibility programs in the forest products, manufacturing and retail sectors. I spent four years leading our restaurant and bar and returned it to profitability. I evaluated options for the business as it came time for our lease renewal. Sadly, it quickly became apparent that we had optimized all we could manage and that external factors (rent, wages, crime, changing neighborhood) would make it increasingly challenging to be profitable in the future, if not impossible. We closed the restaurant with a deliberate approach that gave our employees and customers a chance to say goodbye. My experience running a business has fueled me with a new passion – to engage our frontline workers, to truly see them every day, and to help build a path to economic mobility for all. I am adept at analyzing data, setting goals and making and implementing recommendations for improvement. While I am passionate about driving organizational change, I take a pragmatic approach to ensure change is fully integrated into business strategies and practices. I thrive in cross-functional collaboration, and have learned from and enjoyed my experiences with teams including supply chain, operations, engineering, facilities, compliance, human resources, and marketing and communications.In my off hours, my sustainability focus turns to (very) local agriculture, as I farm my urban Seattle front yard.
