Throughout my internship at DCFS, I spent the majority of my time shadowing different workers in a variety of the divisions within the agency. I directly interacted with individuals and families which allowed me to apply best practices to various client situations. I conducted research on safety for social workers in the community setting and have advocated for increased safety precautions for workers and clients. I took part in the analysis of the agency’s racial equity and inclusion survey and engaged in discussion of the results with the team to determine how to better serve the DCFS staff. I evaluated outside agencies who were applying to house a new drop-in center for homeless youth throughout Cleveland.

Throughout this internship, I worked closely with the Therapeutic Behavioral Specialists in schools learning about how to meet the needs of children with behavior difficulties. I shadowed the TBS staff during school and home visits. I also attended supervision meetings. Often times, my internship also allowed me to shadow counselors to learn the difference between counseling and a TBS role.

Kent State University

Throughout my final year in my undergraduate education, I worked as a tutor for low-income or first generation college students. I tutored students in a variety of humanities courses. Aside from hands-on tutoring sessions, I attend professional development meetings and spend multiple hours a week preparing for the individual student sessions.

I interned at Safer Futures, the only domestic violence shelter for individuals and families in Portage County, Ohio during the first semester of my senior year of undergrad. I spent much time with the resident advocate preparing case plans for the clients which are followed up with case meetings with the residents. The resident advocate, resident and I set goals for the resident each week which involve utilizing resources to help the individual live independently. This position also provided me with the opportunity to advocate for victims of trauma and domestic violence.

This employer provided me with the opportunity to return seasonally for four years after spending four years in the position prior to working seasonally. This position provided me with experience in customer satisfaction by meeting all customers needs and wants within the company. I worked with the managers when handling complaints or specific orders. I gained experience with handling the profit of the company and making trips to the bank, which taught me about the monetary aspects of a for-profit business.
