Ever since I was a young child my passion has been helping people achieve their dreams and goals. Looking back on my childhood, my two strongest influencers were my mother and my aunt. Both worked for a state agency that served individuals with disabilities. From a very young age, I can recall being introduced to the individuals they worked with and helped. My mother and my aunt only focused on their abilities, and for that reason it was not until much later in life did I realize that there was such thing as a medical diagnosis and a word to describe it – “Disability”.Throughout my entire career, I’ve made it my personal mission to always support and assist the people that I work with the exact same way that my mother and my aunt did. I strive to always encourage them and their families to see their abilities and what they are great at rather than where the limitations may lie. I remind them that within the word “Disability” is the word “Ability” and that is where the focus should always be. I truly believe that every single person has undeniable strengths, gifts and talents and that as long as we focus on the person’s abilities, rather than disabilities, then everyone can achieve their goals. For this reason, I feel it’s made me a stronger manager. I have charged my staff to have the same mindset that I do and encourage them to be more positive focused and think about the possible rather than the impossible. This outlook helps companies that I have worked for in the past not only achieve their own goals, but also surpass the goals of the individuals and in return change and enrich their entire lives.
