About Emily Deibert
I currently work as a Science Fellow at the Gemini South Observatory in Chile. In July of 2022, I defended my PhD in Astronomy & Astrophysics from the University of Toronto. My thesis focused on high-resolution observations of exoplanet atmospheres, and I I was supported by an NSERC Vanier Scholarship throughout my PhD.In June of 2017, I completed an HBSc in Astronomy & Astrophysics, English, and Mathematics from Victoria College at the University of Toronto. I graduated with High Distinction. I'm also passionate about science writing and outreach, and have played a leading role in several science outreach initiatives, including Research2Reality. My science writing portfolio, which includes projects for PBS Space Time, The Conversation, and New Scientist, is available on my website: emilydeibert.github.io

Research Assistant
Worked with Drs. Ue-Li Pen, Marten Van Kerkwijk, and John Antoniadis on a project on giant pulses from the Crab pulsar.Project abstract: The Crab pulsar is one of the strongest emitters at radio wavelengths that has been discovered, and exhibits a characteristic pulse profile that is of interest in numerous astrophysical applications—studies of the interstellar medium, constraints on pulsar properties, and the detection of gravitational waves, to name a few. The two major pulse components of this profile are the “main” and “interpulse”, which sometimes manifest themselves as what are referred to as “giant pulses”: short, extremely bright bursts of electromagnetic radiation with flux densities that can be thousands of times greater than those from average pulses. A fainter “precursor” pulse is also observed preceding the main pulse at longer (i.e. radio) wavelengths, more closely resembling typical pulsar radiation. Although main and interpulse giant pulses have been observed in the Crab and several other pulsars, the exact mechanism by which the occur remains unknown. From a survey of giant pulses taken from simultaneous observations at the Algonquin Radio Observatory (ARO), the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), and the Jodrell Bank 13m telescope, I attempted to characterize and study various components of this enigmatic phenomenon. In particular, I used polarization information from the precursor pulse, which is well-understood, to determine polarization properties of individual giant pulses. I also compared pairs of pulses from ARO observations in preparation for a correlation analysis similar to that of Cordes et al., 2004. These results were then analyzed in the context of the overall goal of understanding and constraining properties of pulsar emission mechanisms, as well as making use of giant pulses in a novel technique known as “scintillometry” to resolve the emission regions of the Crab to pico-arcsecond precision.
