Democracy Matters (DM) is a campus-based, non-partisan national student organization that trains young organizers to advocate for pro-democracy reforms, particularly surrounding issues of money in politics. Following two highly successful terms as DM Campus Coordinator at Bloomsburg University, I was invited to join the national organization's Board of Directors.• As a member of the Board, I designed and implemented proposed systemic changes to board structure and innovative communication technologies and techniques to advance organizational goals to reform government ethics, ensure fair elections, and institute public financing of elections. I developed and maintained relationships with coalition partners, wrote and spoke publicly on behalf of the organization, and assisted in formulating goals for the year. I also engaged alumni involvement as a means to grow the organization and advance its goals.

The Allegheny County Office of Conflict Counsel represents clients who cannot, due to a conflict of interest, be represented by the Allegheny County Public Defender's Office.• As a certified legal intern, I represented clients facing charges including solicitation and felony drug possession at preliminary hearings at Pittsburgh Municipal Court, drafted post-trial motions and briefs in support, including a petition for allocatur to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. As part of this, I interviewed clients at the Allegheny County Jail and Pittsburgh Municipal Court.

The University of Pittsburgh Immigration Law Clinic provides Pitt Law students with hands-on experience representing clients in the federal immigration system and performing all aspects of case preparation and management.• As a certified legal intern, I represented immigrants requesting asylum, facing removal from the United States, and seeking special protection under the Violence Against Women Act through interviewing clients, writing pleadings, appearing in Immigration Court, appearing before administrative agencies, and managing post-relief issues.

Neighborhood Legal Services Association (NLSA) was created to address the lack of basic legal assistance in civil matters for those without the means to hire a private attorney.• As a Gismondi Legal Fellow, I represented low-income tenants in landlord/tenant disputes arising from housing denials or evictions due to criminal history and domestic violence situations, habitability concerns, and issues regarding rent payments through direct negotiations with landlords, magisterial district court hearings, arbitration, motion and injunction hearings before the Court, and Housing Authority appeals. I also trained medical residents to recognize medical issues that could be addressed through legal intervention and introduced them to the Medical-Legal partnership between NLSA and UPMC-McKeesport.

The Federal Public Defender's office provides defense services to individuals who are financially unable to obtain adequate representation in Federal criminal cases, appeals, and habeas corpus matters.• As a legal intern, I investigated state sentencing guidelines to establish the incentive a plea deal put on a now-recanting witness's prior testimony for a habeas corpus case. I also advised attorneys regarding the ability to modify or suspend a probation requirement that a client live for 6 months in a halfway house when such a requirement may cause undue hardship.

Judge Lisa Pupo Lenihan was appointed to the bench in 2004. She formerly served Chief Magistrate Judge.• As an intern, I drafted the basis of Federal District Judge Ambrose's opinion for a case that concerned rebuttal of the mailbox rule, as changed by Lupyan v. Corinthian Colleges Inc., 761 F.3d 314 (3d Cir. 2014).

The Legal Aid Centre of Eldoret (LACE) provides pro bono legal aid services to HIV positive individuals and provides legal advocates for survivors of sexual, gender-based, and domestic violence.• As a legal intern, in addition to traditional duties, I drafted a $27,000 grant proposal to train paralegals to provide legal assistance throughout Western Kenya and expand LACE’s legal support network. I also upgraded the LACE website (http://lacelaw.org/KE/).

The Washington Center provides immersive internships and academic seminars to students from hundreds of colleges and universities and young professionals from across the U.S. and more than twenty-five countries.• As Logistics Coordinator for the Office of Federal Relations, I coordinated travel, housing, and transportation-related field trips for interns in the Summer Transportation Internship Program for Diverse Groups (STIPDG) on behalf of the federal Department of Transportation. Additionally, I authored a transition manual for easier on-boarding of future Logistics Coordinators.

The Office of Legislative Policy and Analysis (OLPA) provides essential information, advice, and guidance on Congressional actions affecting NIH to the NIH Director, the Office of the Director, NIH’s Institutes and Centers, and the broader NIH community. • As Special Assistant to the Associate Director for OLPA, I provided administrative support and digitized records. I also coordinated and scheduled meetings for the Director of NIH with members of Congress.

L’Arche is an inter-denominational Christian community of individuals of all backgrounds centered around members who have intellectual disabilities, known as “Core Members.”• As a Member Assistant, I lived in community with and served as an advocate for the Core Members while assisting them in their daily life. I also served as part of the development team and assisted in fundraising and organizational networking.

John Bell (D) challenged then-incumbent Bob Marshall (R) for Virginia's House of Delegates, District 13.• As a field organizer, I recruited volunteers to canvass and call to garner support for the candidate, called constituents, and canvassed door-to-door.

I spoke extensively at public events on the subjects of money in politics, government ethics reform, and their effects on average Americans. I directed and organized student Lobby Days to the Pennsylvania state capitol, promoting legislation for the public funding of Pennsylvania judicial elections ("Fair Elections). I aided in the drafting of Fair Elections legislation with Common Cause Pennsylvania.
