As a researcher, I combine approaches from psychology, anthropology, and public health to understand how the intersection of biology and culture shape infant feeding practices and perinatal support systems. I have published on biases in developmental psychology, cultural models of infant care, and cultural and psychological perspectives on infant-caregiver interaction, with a specific focus on infant carrying as a cultural practice, parenting tool, and public health intervention. I regularly present this research as an invited speaker, in research seminars, and as part of targeted curricula development for public health agencies and community-based organizations. Community-based research and design of public health curricula in Micronesia, Central and South America, and Southeast Asia inspired my passion for strengthening cultures of support for infants and caregivers and promoting equity in all aspects of my work. This international perspective inspired the launch of Nurturely, a nonprofit organization focused on equity in pregnancy, postpartum, and infant health. We take a preventative, equity-focused approach to tackle the root cause of inequities in perinatal health: systemic racism in perinatal care, disproportionate impacts of the climate crisis, and barriers to a representative perinatal workforce. Through education, research, and cultural change, our quickly-growing team at Nurturely is working to dismantle the barriers to wellness for all infants and parents. My research continues at Nurturely, where I lead preventative perinatal health interventions that have been successful in increasing lactation rates and decreasing postpartum depression.
