“I’m tired of hearing about kids beating the odds, I want to change the odds.” I remember hearing this quote from Geoffrey Canada (Founder of Harlem Children’s Zone) back when I was still a first-generation, low-income college student, and it has stuck with me ever since. As an educator and nonprofit leader, I worked to change the odds for young people individually, through direct service. In academia, I focused on quantitative and qualitative research that would inform institutional policymaking and change the odds for all students. Now, I am a connector of these worlds, using my skills to bridge the gap between researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to change the odds for young people at Thrive Scholars and beyond.
