Profile bio

About Emily O’Connor

Hello! I am an interdisciplinary artist from Flower Mound, Texas (the Dallas area). I graduated from The University of North Texas with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts in the field of New Media Art in 2018. I work in a variety of mediums and techniques, such as sculpture, fibers, digital art, film, painting and drawing, and installation work. My primary focus is on combining sculpture and installation art with technology. Through my work, I explore the themes of hallucinations and the human brain, femininity, ephemerality, and ethereality. I often experiment with the materiality of light and how it can be manipulated. These works use projections and reflective components to bend and shape light, invoking a sense of celestial ambience. I got my freelance career started in the Denton arts and music community, creating installation work or designing stages for music events. I am most known for my stage lighting and live audiovisual performances, usually displayed alongside performing bands. Through my use of bright, saturated colors and psychedelic patterns, my visuals evoke a dream-like atmosphere. My goal is to continue on this path and to eventually be performing for larger venues and festivals around the world.I was awarded two DAM (Denton Arts and Music) awards in 2018 for Best Visual Artist and Best New Media Artist, and in 2019 for Best Visual Artist.I moved to Las Vegas in 2019, where I continued my career in the events industry. I was employed by MGM Resorts Events Production, fabricating props and creating art installations for some of the biggest events in Vegas. This was one of my favorite jobs I had ever had, but I was unfortunately let go do to Covid. Turns out events don't really happen when there's a global pandemic. I began working for a nonprofit organization called Opportunity Village that works with individuals that have intellectual and developmental disabilities. Their mission is to provide direct care for these individuals, as well as empower them and give them the resources to join the workforce. My position as the "Art Mentor" in the Fine and Performing Arts Program is to teach various art techniques to the clients and facilitate their creation of artworks. These artworks are then sold, providing the clients with a paycheck, and the organization with more funds for the program. We work with a variety of mediums and approaches to art making, and often have to come up with adaptive solutions for individuals to work with their disability and allow them to meet their artistic goals.
