My fall copy editing class includes journalism minors and other students, mostly juniors and seniors. The class features lessons in grammar, Associated Press style, headline and caption writing, and news editing techniques.

I managed and edited writers and freelancers who cover the arts, dining, drinks, food, film, television and pop culture for both print and online. I also was in charge of the Statesman's weekly entertainment section, which involved maintaining an editorial calendar, space planning, headline and caption writing, photo selection and planning social media strategy. I occasionally wrote for print and online publications and blogs, including live coverage of events such as the Texas Book Festival and South by Southwest. I left the Statesman at the end of November 2018 after accepting a voluntary buyout.

I managed dayside editing operations for our features and opinion pages under a remote desk editing system. I was responsible for budgeting and planning sections and served as a liaison between in-house editors and writers and the designers and editors at our production facility in Dayton, Ohio. I edited stories for local and Associated Press style, helped with photo selection and story play, offered design critiques and proofed pages.

Responsible for the nightly production of news, business and sports sections, from selecting content to maintaining copy flow and making sure deadlines were met. Supervised a staff of about 30 copy editors and designers who worked on all sections of the daily paper. Managed hiring, scheduling and staff development and worked with other departments on daily planning and special projects. Helped lead the transition to a more universal copy desk. In addition to my managerial duties, I worked on the daily production of the paper. On any given night, I could be a copy editor, wire editor or section chief. I regularly handled news, business, sports and feature copy, checking for Associated Press style, spelling, grammar, clarity and fairness while also writing headlines and photo captions.

Edited stories for style and content; wrote headlines and photo captions; chose international and national news stories for the paper; edited stories and blogs for publication on statesman.com.
