Profile bio

About Emily Sharp

I am a proud Arrernte Aboriginal woman currently in my final year of study at Griffith University, undertaking a Bachelor of Environmental Science, majoring in conservation and ecology.I have a very clear view of what I wish to achieve and where I intend my studies to take me upon completion of my degree. My cultural background paired with my passion across the environmental sector has been of huge influence and ultimately, has led me to commence my study within this area of science. Through my STEM degree I have found there to be many gaps in adequate understanding from the western science world view, of what traditional knowledge is and its relevance to conservation and climate adaption.Throughout my undergraduate I have had the opportunity to undertake my own personal research topic on traditional water quality methods with compelling results. I desire to continue on this path. It is my goal to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms occurring when conducting traditional Aboriginal environmental and conservation methods for healing Country. With this knowledge I endeavour to gain meaningful employment that incorporates traditional Aboriginal practices, bringing them more so into the forefront of mainstream environmental practices, sharing a more holistic approach in the aid to mitigate the effects of our changing climate in a more sustainable way. I firmly believe incorporating this knowledge in an ethical manner will not only bridge environmental gaps, but aid socially and economically for wider communities, giving traditional knowledge holders the well deserved recognition.
