I acquire, edit, and publish a broad range of nonfiction titles. I work with leading voices in narrative history, politics, journalism, big ideas, inspirational, and literary nonfiction, from idea development to execution, then work with my team to package and present those books to a broad audience.

I assisted the editorial director at Gotham Books. I worked on a variety of nonfiction books, including memoir, essay collections, narrative nonfiction, history, music, pop culture, and humor.

Greater New York City Area

Big Umbrella is a monthly nonfiction reading series in the East Village. A sister series to the long-running Fiction Addiction, Big Umbrella features excellent nonfiction work by emerging and established writers every 2nd Tuesday, upstairs at 2A, at 8pm. We partner with McNally Jackson bookstore to provide our writer's books for sale at each reading.

I wrote book reviews for the web site.

I assisted three editors in making college English and High School AP English textbooks. This means I got to choose the essays (and some short stories) to include in our textbooks (which was the most fun part), edit and write pedagogical content; I prepared manuscripts for turnover, communicated with my authors and our production team to make sure projects ran smoothly from start to finish. I independently edited a teacher's manual for High School AP English and wrote and edited posts for our High School Bits Blog, a resource for teachers of AP English.I also sought reprint permissions for art and texts that appeared in our books, ran reviews of books to plan revisions, and offered whatever administrative assistance my editors needed.

Before Soft Skull sadly shut down in 2010, I worked under the amazing Denise Oswald, reading and evaluating fiction and nonfiction manuscripts, drafting cover and catalog copy, copyediting, and updating our web site with relevant title information.

I tutored undergraduates both in person and online who were writing in all subjects, which meant I got to learn, too. I also tutored graduate Nursing students online and worked on web development for the Online Writery's website.

After working on the magazine for 3 years, I got to run it my senior year. I lead editorial meetings, delegated reading, design, production, and promotion. I gave presentations to creative writing workshops to get them to submit their work; I made final decisions on published material, layout, design, etc.While E-i-C, I obtained a record number of submissions in all categories and received over 40% of total allotted student organization funds spread among 79 different organizations.Before this, I served as Nonfiction Editor 2006-2008 and Reader 2005-2006.

As Office Assistant:I was responsible for tracking the roughly bajillions of submissions coming in and going out. I helped train interns how not to lose manuscripts, apologized to authors when interns lost manuscripts anyway, helped to organize events, handled customer service issues, and made a lot of big talk about getting an office banzai tree.As Intern:I read 10-20 fiction and nonfiction submissions per week, gave manuscript reports, judged the annual video contest, and interviewed author Benjamin Percy (published in Summer 2009 Issue).Both positions opened up the idea of doing publishing as a career to me and I can't speak highly enough of this magazine and everyone who works on it.
