A writer with experience in all aspects of journalism, from sportswriter on a weekly small-town newspaper to editor of three national commission reports to the U.S. Congress and President of the United States. Along the way I've covered pop music, reported on disabilities issues, written about Shakespeare, edited an internationally circulated military magazine, and spent time as a professional roller coaster rider. Winner of 2023 Folio Award for Excellence in Journalism (Eddie Award) Single Article, Association / Nonprofit, Professional / Membership Association.I've applied my writing/reporting/editing/design skills to all mediums--newspapers, magazines, books, policy reports, and web-based formats--and I'm ready to do so in whatever digital technology lies around the next corner. Heck, I've been adjusting to new technologies since the first time I tossed a manual typewriter out the window.Even with my journalism experience and skills, my success as editor of THE OFFICER and on national commissions owes most to my ability to build and manage teams of writers, editors, and designers. We succeed with a focused vision and a carefully planned strategic process that inspires individual talents to flourish. (The secret: I hire people smarter and more skilled than me.) Twice recipient of the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service: in 2016 as editor of the National Commission on the Future of the Army, and in 2023 as Senior Consultant with the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, for planning, building, and operating Camp Legacy, part of the "Welcome Home!" festivities on the National Mall, May 11-13, honoring and thanking Vietnam Veterans and their families.
