I enjoy occasional work in the primary school setting, supporting students to optimise their learning within a safe and caring learning environment. While I have a background in physical education and special education, I prefer to use these skills in a generalist way with all students in the classroom setting. In addition to my traditional teaching background and experience over more than 35 years, I have completed a Certificate IV in Mental Health at Swinburne in 2022 to give me better insights into the growing concerns of increasing mental health issues in children and youth. The impacts of COVID and the general unrest within the global community at large, have perhaps exacerbated conditions that were already there for some, and created conditions that did not exist previously for others.I am also studying the Diploma of Counselling course with AIPC and I am completing the Mentorship Program in Therapeutic Touch with TTAA. Through such studies I gain greater knowledge and insights into how I may be able to provide appropriate and relevant support and assistance to the students with whom I work.

During 2021 I completed the course work and simulation assessments for the Certificate IV in Mental Health. The focus of this program was to address the psychosocial aspects of individuals struggling with a mental illness. A trauma-informed recovery model with motivational interviewing formed the basis of the practical training. From October-December 2021, I was on placement in a high school setting in the role of a Parent Support Worker with the school Wellbeing Team. In this role I supported parents who were struggling with an adolescent child at home, or whose child is a school refuser; or the parent may have just need a compassionate listener to support them in their important role of parenting. Preparing case notes and following all Wellbeing daily processes was an integral part of each placement day. All this work was done within the guidelines, policies and processes of the Wellbeing Team and the framework within which the high school sits under the direction of the Department of Education in Victoria.

Ruskin Park Primary School has a proud 50-year history as a well-established local state school, offering a comprehensive education aimed at meeting the needs of every student at the school. I was grateful to work with many excellent teachers and support staff during my eight years as school principal. The connections made with the students were always the highlight of every day. During my eight years as the school principal at Ruskin Park Primary School in Croydon 3136, I was privileged to have the support of many amazing, hard-working and contributing parents within the school community. Many physical changes to the grounds and buildings took place during my appointment. The playgrounds were upgraded and a running track was created around the oval. A new full-size gymnasium/stage/kitchen complex was built and many renovations took place within the original school building onsite including the complete refurbishment of the main school office and entry space.
