Profile bio

About Emma Bortz

Although AI models are becoming ubiquitous across many disciplines, it's difficult to explain how they make their predictions. At NDIF's Technical Outreach Manager, I help researchers understand the inner workings of AI. I also oversee NDIF’s External Scientific Advisory Board to help drive strategic planning. Before NDIF, I completed my Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, where I used optical imaging experiments to study how ultrasound modulated neural activity. Although I applied machine learning and AI models to process and analyze my data, I didn’t realize it was possible to further interpret these models’ predictions. My current mission is to empower other researchers with similar backgrounds by teaching them how to better understand how their data is processed by deep learning models, ultimately enabling more informed and transparent use of AI.I was actively involved in several initiatives during my Ph.D., including work with Nucleate. With Nucleate, I supported aspiring biotech entrepreneurs to spin out their academic research into viable business ventures. I managed relationships for over ten corporate partners, raising $175K in sponsorship funding and planning workshops for more than 100 participants. I also co-hosted a season of BU’s Vitamin PhD podcast and led a mentoring program focused on supporting women in STEM.

Listed skills include Matlab, Cell Culture, Solidworks, Ni Multisim, and 15 others.
