Interning at TOCmedia allowed me to improve my marketing skills and apply the knowledge I gained through my coursework at Thomas College. I learned to use programs such as Asana, Slack, LastPass, and Dropbox in addition to marketing tools including Facebook Business Manager, Pages Manager, Hootsuite, Mail Chimp, and Google My Business. My key tasks at TOCmedia included social media content creation, blog posting, image selection and photography, graphics creation, and copywriting. I created content for multiple companies since starting my internship using social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Using stock images from Dreamstime or Pixabay, I selected images for social media or blog posts. Original photographs or graphics created in Photoshop were also sources of images for social media and blogs. I also wrote copy for social media and blogs. Once completing the social media or blog content, I added the content to Hootsuite or WordPress. Most often, the posts were going to be published at a future date so I scheduled a time and date for the post to be published. When publishing a blog, I would make sure a meta description and keywords were used. I learned how to create SEO friendly content. In addition to creating content, I visited our clients to gather information and take photographs. This helped me to build strong connections with clients and improve my social skills.

As a customer assistant at North Star Orchards, I work in the retail store. I tend to the needs of the customers and make sure they are enjoying their experience at the orchard. My main job is to bag specific orders of apples for customers and make sure the shelves are adequately stocked with the different varieties of apples and different bag sizes. If customers have questions, I am available to answer questions or give directions to other locations on the orchard such as the Pick-Your-Own site or the restroom. Another task I often complete is preparing food or cider samples for customers to test before they purchase. In addition to working in the store in the fall, I also help to bottle cider. I work at North Star Orchards year-round, allowing me to be involved in other aspects of the business as well. In the winter, I help sort the apples, put together orders for Hannaford stores, drive the forklift, assemble gift packages for the holiday season, and load the delivery truck. In spring, the honey bees are rented to pollinate the apples and pear blossoms. I help to pick up the bees from the bee rental business, unload the bees, set up the electric fence to protect the bees, and monitor the hives and electric fences. I also help return the bees to the rental facility. During the summer months, I have pruned the apples trees, hand thinned the trees to produce higher quality fruit, repaired the fence around the orchard, and prepared new trees for future apple production. Through working at North Star Orchards, I have learned about food safety procedures and the food production process. I have also learned a great deal about managing a business, from completing the payroll and paying bills to marketing and employee management. From working at North Star Orchards, I have strengthened my work ethic and my ability to work with others.
