About Emma Downs
I am currently an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts teaching general chemistry inorganic chemistry. Previously I taught at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. I am passionate about science education. Science is a key component of solving the world's problems and a science literate population is vital. The problem solving skills taught in chemistry are useful in many other career paths. I am also interested in outreach to younger students, and participated in many excellent events with the UO Women in Graduate Science as an active member and officer. These include a CSI day for Girl Scouts and Science Adventure Days on polymers and chemistry in food with the local science museum, the Science Factory. I also have a background writing, and a bachelor's degree in English. I am interested the communication of scientific knowledge and discoveries, both through teaching and science writing.I earned my Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Oregon under adviser Professor David Tyler. My focus was inorganic chemistry and my research explored transition metal catalysts for the hydration of cyanohydrins, including homogeneous and nanoparticle catalysts. This research is working toward the goal of improving the manufacture of methyl methacrylate, the monomer for Plexiglas.
