About Emma Hart

I am currently pursuing my Master's in Development Studies at the University of Cambridge as a member of King's College. My research is in Feminism, Masculinities, and Patriarchal Violence. At Cambridge, I serve as events officer for the Cambridge American Society and secretary for King's College Feminist Society, and am a pole vaulter for the Cambridge University Athletics Club. I am also an intern for the Psychology Coalition at the United Nations. My research was inspired by my year on the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, which I returned from in July 2024. My project examined gender-based violence prevention and intervention methods, mostly those that focus on men and boys. I learned from and worked alongside organizations in Australia, Thailand, South Africa, New Zealand, Croatia, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom that create spaces for boys and men to engage in conversations about topics like survivor-focused and feminist allyship, emotional literacy and well-being, and gender-based violence prevention.I graduated from Oberlin College ('23) with majors in psychology (highest honors) and dance, a law & society minor, and an integrative concentration in education studies. Beginning in my first year at Oberlin, I created and led an organization called Survivors Of Sexual Harm & Allies (SOSHA), which advocates for justice for survivors of sexual violence, creates support spaces, facilitates community discussions about rape culture, and provides visibility around gender-based violence through events like Take Back the Night. As an extension of this work, I co-created the Athletic Coalition to End Sexual violence (ACES) and lead research projects in social psychology. My senior psychology thesis, "Vicarious Dissonance: Impacts on Group Identification and Ingroup Member Likability" explored how members of social groups respond to dissonant behavior by ingroup members. While at Oberlin, I also served in various mentorship roles, was a writing associate, pole vaulted on the varsity track and field team, and interned with NGOs and government agencies that work across local, state, and national levels of policy. In the future, I hope to pursue social change work relating to victim-survivor services, criminal justice reform, and/or gender equality, with the goal of contributing to a safer and more compassionate world.

I held open forums, coordinated large-scale events, and advocated for survivor-centered education and policy. In my last year, I coordinated all of SOSHA's programming and mentored younger leaders in the organization. Now, I serve on the alumni board and provide counsel to current leaders as needed.
