Scientific research on lemon Sharks and other marine species-I participated in the Shark Lab's annual research project that has run since 2004. This research project is called PIT which stands for passive integrative transmission. This project is aimed to get data on the immigration and emigration patterns on lemon sharks from the mangrove nurseries. We set up 180 meter gill nets that tie from the mangroves out to open water. We are out on the water for 12 straight hours and check the net every 15 minutes to see if we have caught any sharks. If so, we see if the shark is a recap by reading its PIT tag number. If it is a new cap, we will physically tag the shark, and take down data and measurements about the shark. I have also helped 3 PhD students work on their various projects. I have spent various hours observing sharks from towers while taking data on how they react to novel objects. I have also observed sharks interact with each other and know how to analyze who is the leader and which sharks are more social than others. I know how to track sharks that have accelerometers attached to their dorsal fins. I have tracked sharks for 7 hours at a time switching off between taking data, driving the small skiff boat, and actually tracking the shark using a hydrophone and receiver. I have helped graduate students who are researching the effectiveness of SUR's, which stands for submersible ultrasonic receivers. I know how to submerge them in various places in the mangroves and around the nurseries where sharks are expected to swim.I am very comfortable with the process of gillnetting as well as setting up long lines. I am confident in my shark handling abilities.

I spent 6 hours a week working in this lab analyzing samples under a microscope. I was looking at the relationship of how parasites can influence the emergence of disease in trematode, amphibian, and snail populations. I went through numerous samples of fresh water systems taken from California. I gathered data on how many cheatogasters, zooplankton, and ostracodas I observed in each sample and tank. I am now very confident in handling microscopes and identifying a variety of zooplankton.
