Tasks: Analyze the total phenolics in lima bean samples to aide in the research work of PhD candidate Grace Freundlich in the Emery laboratory. My work includes utilizing well-developed skills in preparing reagent solutions with given concentrations, precise pipetting skills - both single and multi-channel - and efficient operation of a spectrophotometer and conjunct SoftMax Pro analysis programming. This position builds off of absorbance analysis skills developed in previous projects of cyanide concentration analysis in lima bean plants (Emery laboratory) and analysis of BioAvailable Phosphorus in desert soils (Maier laboratory).

Tucson, Arizona Area

Tasks: Analyzed the bioavailable phosphorus (BAP) in desert soils under the mentorship of Priyanka Kushwaha, PhD. This internship allowed me to develop a strong foundation in chemical analysis of soil samples and further increased my technical laboratory skillset including but not limited to: preparing reagent solutions of given concentrations, purification using vacuum filtration and carbon black, single and multi-channel pipetting, and absorbance spectroscopy analysis. My role in the Maier laboratory also accelerated the maturation of my interpersonal and time management skills in order to most efficiently complete the BAP protocol.

Louisville, Kentucky Area

Tasks: Assisted Prasadi Adhihetty with her work focused on development of gas sensor array technology for measurement of target Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in air. I synthesized different Urea-thiol organic compounds to coat gold-nanoparticle sensors in order to detect VOCs present in the ambient environment. Throughout my time in the Nantz Organic Chemistry laboratory I ran a multitude of samples through 1HNMR analysis to detect purity of synthesized compounds, purified samples using silica-gel columns, utilized the rotovap to dehydrate organic solutions, ran reactions under inert atmosphere, and employed proper use of PPE for safety.
