About Emma Kim Rust
My name is Emma Kim Rust (they/them pronouns). I am a full time C-DBT therapist at Associated Clinic of Psychology in Minneapolis, MN and a part time C-DBT practionner at the Emotion Management Program in Chicago, IL.My passion as a therapist is to meet people in their pain and interact with them from the premise that they matter and belong, that whatever they are struggling with makes perfect sense in the context of their histories of invalidation, trauma, and oppression, and that they have the agency to make choices in their life that are meaningful, even amidst the often violent conditions we live under. Because of this I practice a "C-DBT" approach, which takes many of the practices from DBT and uses them in a contextually specific manner with an emphasis on increasing psychological flexibility rather than "behavior replacement."My hope as I progress in my career, is to tailor my therapeutic work to serve predominantly queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, people of color (QTBIPOC). As a person who experiences compounding oppression through the intersection of my race, gender, and sexual orientation, I know it is crucial to provide mental health services that don't force clients to compromise who they are, and that can anticipate the unique barriers and harms QTBIPOC experience.Outside of clinical social work, I am also a community facilitator and mediator. I believe in many cases, healing and transformation need to occur outside of the therapy room and at the community level. Because of this, I offer community mediation services, consultation for community level harm, and facilitation for challenging conversations including conflicts.
