About Emma Last

I am a First Class Honours graduate with experience in music marketing, management, creative consultancy, administration, digital content creation, and communication. Serving as Co-Founder and Global Editor of CRESCENDO Magazine, I am wholeheartedly committed to amplifying artists. I have a strong enthusiasm for growing artist audiences and exceptional administrative proficiency. This dedication, combined with my creative and people skills, has led me to pursue a variety of roles within the music industry, including marketing, management, photography, promotion, merchandise, publicity, and live event assistance. As well as taking initiative and solving problems independently, I always strive to collaborate with the people around me. I am very approachable and have always been a considerate listener. My ability to stay calm under pressure means I am able to support a variety of projects concurrently and work across several teams simultaneously in fast-paced environments. In addition to working in the music and live events industries, I also have extensive experience within health research communication and charity marketing, with a BSc degree in Cancer Biomedicine. My work has largely focussed on growing the outreach of cancer and wellness charities, and has strengthened my ability to handle complex and sensitive data.Using leadership to improve access to education and equity of opportunity is another huge interest of mine. As co-founder of Access, I worked to provide free, accessible British Sign Language education and, through other volunteer roles, I have mentored disadvantaged students through their progression to higher education, planned curriculums for school clubs around the world, taught photography and creative design to secondary school students, and produced a variety of free educational animations on topics within science.

Project Title: Self-generated Sounds in Human NeonatesProject Supervisor: Dr Kimberley Whitehead, UCL Department of Neuroscience, Physiology, and PharmacologyExamined the acoustic features of self-generated sounds in neonates to explore how the brain encodes these cries and how they learn to associate their cries with a caregiving response in order to consciously use it as a signal, communicating their needs to their environment. During the project period, I completed a literature review on neonatal self-generated sounds in healthy infants, premature infants, and those with brain injury, and observed how they have been analysed by other research groups. I then explored existing datasets of sound recordings with time-locked EEG data using MATLAB/EEGLAB. I analysed various features of neonatal cries, with a particular focus on fundamental frequency, but also duration of cries, time between cries, power, and how these features changed throughout their crying episodes.
