I know that accounting is a good fit for me because I tried a lot of different things before I found something that clicked. I came into The University of Tennessee as a Biology major planning on going to dental school and becoming an orthodontist. After my first semester, I knew that was not for me and spent the following two semesters trying new things. When I took the intro accounting course, I realized it was something that I enjoy doing, and I would love to pursue a career in this field.
Accounting And Assurance Intern
This internship allowed me to gain extremely valuable hands-on experience in public accounting. My main responsibility was working on employee benefit plan audits. By the end of my internship I had worked on countless plans. Toward the end of my experience, I had the opportunity to be a part of a financial statement audit. Not only did I get to work on actual audits, but I got to see how interactions between accountants and clients worked. This experience allowed me to gain several personal relationships as well. My internship with Coulter & Justus not only allowed me to grow tremendous amounts professionally, but it also solidified my choice to become a CPA.
Administrative Assistant
As an Administrative Assistant with Legacy Builders, I was responsible for the majority of the office tasks. My main roles were preparing payroll, invoicing customers, and bookkeeping with QuickBooks Online. I also completed other various tasks given to me by the owner.
Sales Lead
After being with the company for around six months, I had the opportunity to be promoted to a Sales Lead. As a sales lead at Francesca's, it was my responsibility to be the host in the boutique. That entailed creating a friendly and upbeat environment for not only the guests, but for the other team members working alongside me. This position allowed me to take initiative and to execute new ideas. I made sure the visuals looked their best each time I worked, delegated tasks to stylists, and lead the team by setting expectations for each shift. I communicated results to my team as well as our district manager. I was also responsible for opening and closing procedures, which included cash registers and nightly paperwork.
Stylist
In this role, the main responsibilities I maintained were making the guests feel comfortable in the boutique as well as operating the cash registers and maintaining organization. I enjoyed this role because I was able to work with fashion, which is something I am passionate about. It was always fun to get to know each guest and assist them in selecting pieces appropriate for their special events or occasions. I also enjoyed getting to offer my advice and opinions to women and girls each day. It is so rewarding to be able to help people feel confident and comfortable in their own skin.
Administrative Assistant
I stepped into this position the summer after my sophomore year of high school and continued for three summers. I was able to gain so many personal relationships as well as a variety of work experiences. I served as the person who did whatever needed to be done. I would work at the front desk greeting and checking in volunteers, taking phone calls to answer questions, or accepting and logging donations. I also worked in the office completing monthly statistics, creating new organization ideas and executing them, and fulfilling any other task that seemed necessary. I worked in the clothing closet and other storage spaces organizing materials and creating a way to allow easier access for residents and other staff members. I worked on preparing monthly newsletters to be mailed to donors. I was also able to have experiences at the cookouts, clothing closet, and women's meetings that allowed me to interact with some of the clients that the Hendersonville Rescue Mission Serves. This was an eye opening job which prepared me for not only other work experiences, but life in general. It taught me the importance of working with deadlines, taking initiative, and being detail oriented. Each of these things carry over into every aspect of my life and will be a valuable asset in any job that I hold.
Intern
My senior year of high school I had the opportunity to work with this local orthodontist office as an intern. During my time here, I was able to witness the merging of Dr. Joe H. Farrar Orthodontics, with a new business, Blue Ridge Orthodontics, which was ready to expand. I had the unique opportunity to work with Dr. Farrar, who was my orthodontist, which meant a lot to me because he was a figure I always looked up to. This valuable hands-on experience allowed me to learn about maintaining sanitation to the standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), watch doctors and assistants perform orthodontic techniques, and to practice some of those techniques myself. I gained a lot of insight not only into the Orthodontic profession but also into how the merging of companies works. I am thankful that I was able to witness this transition.
Intern
My senior year of high school, the internship program I participated in led me to Caroline Albea Orthodontics. I joined this company within the first few months of its birth. This was such a unique and valuable experience that allowed me to witness the behind-the-scenes of starting a business. Dr. Albea was an inspiration to me and seeing her company grow was such a rewarding experience.
Sales Associate
Working at a large department store seemed like a daunting task at first, however I quickly learned that working in my specific departments made it seem a lot smaller. I specialized in shoes, handbags, and fine jewelry. Each area yielded different tasks which helped me gain a variety of experiences. In shoes, I was tasked with assisting customers with their shoe selections and bringing the correct sizes from the back room. In handbags, I was responsible for making sure organization was maintained and assisting customers who needed higher end bags unlocked. Finally, in fine jewelry, I was responsible for unlocking the safes and placing the jewelry into the displays at opening and removing the jewelry from displays and placing it back into the safes at closing. I also assisted customers with their selections and unlocked pieces to allow customers to try on. In addition to these tasks, I also opened, closed, and operated cash registers.
