About Emma Maclaughlin-Barck

My name is Emma MacLaughlin-Barck, I’m currently in my second year of studying Textile Design and Spanish, as well as Sustainability, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I’m interested in going into the textile design sector of the sustainable fashion industry. Using knowledge about the Earth and the challenges we are facing with global warming to bring a more sustainable perspective into the fashion industry is really important to me. Cloth and clothing aren't something that will be going away anytime soon, so it is important to do what we can to make the production and consumption as environmentally friendly as possible. Currently, I am a member of the Apparel and Textile Association, Re-Wear It, and Phi Upsilon Omicron Honor Society at UW. Through these meetings, I seek out volunteer opportunities and extra knowledge within the fashion industry to further my professional development. I am always looking for new opportunities to learn about my interests. In addition to being a full-time student, I am working part-time as a Sales Associate at Madewell, which gives me the opportunity to see firsthand how customers interact with clothes and the fashion industry as a whole. In the past, I have worked as an administrative intern, which has taught me critical business and leadership skills.In both my work and studying experiences, I have developed skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and Adobe Creative Suite. I consistently use all of these programs in my coursework, and often employ them in my professional endeavors, so I am continually expanding my knowledge.During my undergraduate education and my career afterward, I hope to work with fellow designers to help inspire and encourage young people within the fashion industry. I would love to find a summer internship this summer or next. With an emphasis on leadership, emotional connection and creativity, I want to lead the drive towards a more sustainable and ethical future for textiles and fashion.
