Project lead for motor protein development in Development Biologics,. I oversee the end to end process of design/engineering, purification, testing/assay development and analysis of improved motor proteins. Directly developed the E8.2 and E8.2.1 enzymes leading to the highest accuracy nanopore sequencing yet. I manage a team of two reports and collaborate directly with many stakeholders including other R&D teams, productions teams and senior management.I followed an undergraduate interest in DNA-Protein interactions developed in my undergraduate degree to study a PhD examining the mechanism of the helicase like domain of the restriction enzyme EcoP15I triggering long range diffusion on DNA in the Szczelkun lab at Bristol. My research was published in a first author paper in Nature Chemical Biology. I gained skills in enzyme assay development and analysis (particularly Stopped Flow methods), protein purification and molecular biology techniques. I also completed an industrial placement at New England Biolabs, using PacBio SMRT sequencing to uncover altered methylation patterns of de novo designed Restriction-Modification enzymes.I am strongly motivated by environmental concerns and successfully headed an initiative with EHS to introduce lab waste segregation, recycling and carboard BioBins to reduce plastic waste from the R&D labs. I am currently the R&D Environment representative for ONT's Values in Action program. We engage with our colleagues to bring ideas about improving sustainability to senior management stakeholders who can help us implement them.Outside of work I have been training in aerial circus for seven years, mostly in aerial silks, trapeze and recently counterbalance. I perform in local festivals and at fundraisers with my circus team, raising money for good causes. I am a keen seamstress and have committed to sewing most of my own clothes in recent years. I also dabble in silversmithing when I get the opportunity.

Protein BiochemistOxford Nanopore Technologies Nov 2020 - PresentOxford, England, United KingdomProject lead for motor protein development in Development Biologics team. I am involved in the end-to-end process of the design, purification, testing and analysis of improved protein components for ONT sequencing chemistry. I also am responsible for the transfer of purification protocols for improved motor proteins to production from development. In addition to my role, I am passionate about creating a greener and safer laboratory environment to work in. As such, am involved in working with the EHS team to bring about successful changes to improve our working environment. -
Phd Research PlacementNew England Biolabs Jul 2018 - Aug 2018Summer placement with collaborators in New England Biolabs as part of my PhD research. I used PacBio SMRT sequencing to characterise the DNA methylation of Type I RM Enzymes with de novo designed DNA binding specificity. Gained experience in DNA library creation and SMRT Sequencing. -
Undergraduate Summer Research PlacementUniversity Of Bristol Jul 2014 - Aug 2014Awarded funding by the School of Biochemistry to undertake a summer research project during the second year of my undergraduate studies. I investigated the suitability of a model of the hERG receptor for use in molecular dynamic drug docking simulations. Through this project I gained experience using a Linux operating system and molecular dynamics simulations. -
Nuffield Science BursaryQueen'S University Belfast Jul 2011 - Aug 2011Awarded funding for a Nuffield summer student placement as a sixth form student. Carried out experiments investigating how alcohol and compatible solutes impact the enzyme kinetics of beta-galactosidase. Named author on the article published on the work in Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology. Awarded Gold CREST Award from the British Science Association for my project.
