Profile bio

About Emma Raftery

After finishing my undergraduate degree in BSc Geology in 2018 I spent 4 years working in the hospitality industry in pubs, micropubs and hotels gaining a wealth of experience as a Front of House member of staff across a variety of rolls. It taught me discipline, drive and determination, skills I took forward into studying for my MSc Environmental Geology and Contamination from the University of Portsmouth part time along side working 40 hours+ a week. I began my first graduate role as a Geo-environmental engineer in October 2021 with Card Geotechnics Limited. In just a few months I had experienced a huge variety of site works and reports, and through this role I gained an excellent grounding and insight into all aspects of geoengineering. I regularly worked on site, supervising Window Sampling and Cable Percussion rigs, as well as conducting garden verification visits and stockpile inspections for materials management plans. I worked on schemes of varying size, that involved both geotechnical and Geo-environmental aspects. I became part of the Construction Training Solutions Centre of Excellence Club aimed at boosting women in the industry, and I also joined the company diversity group, which is something I am highly passionate about. In September 2023 I joined Hydrock as a Geo-environmental Consultant, and I have already been expanding on my skills and knowledge, working with the South East Geo team. I have had the opportunity to improve my reporting skills, undertake training courses to improve my knowledge and start project managing my own projects, keeping track of the project deliverables, finances and invoicing. I have gained confidence in my ability and my work.I am also the current Secretary of the Solent Regional Group of the Geological SocietyThe past few years have really made me value how important I am outside of work and the importance of a work life balance. I am more than just the person you see during the working week. So in my spare time outside of work, I am a knitter and knitwear designer, and you can find my work on Etsy under ASITWShop or Instagram @anotherstitchinthewool. I am an avid reader, and despite spending hours each week outside for work, I still love spending time in the outdoors in my free time walking and hiking.
