  • Bt And Lancaster University
    Research Student
Bt And Lancaster University Oct 2012 - Sep 2016
    Stor-I Doctoral Training Center
This research was conducted in collaboration with Lancaster University and BT towards a PhD in Statistics and Operational Research. My research was motivated by the challenges of planning a large-scale multi-skilled workforce, particularly when demand for the services they provide is uncertain and highly variable. I model the allocation of a workforce to its skills using mathematical programming and aim to improve existing estimations of the value of cross-training employees and understanding of how such work-forces should be deployed. By extending these models to incorporate uncertainty about future demand, I also attempt to reach "rules of thumb" for training actions which will squeeze the most relevant flexibility out of a workforce, relative to demand.
  • Shell Global Solutions
    Graduate Intern (Statistics)
Shell Global Solutions Jul 2011 - Sep 2011
    Shell Technology Center Thornton
Worked in the Statistics and Chemometrics department based at Shell Technology Centre Thornton. Worked on extreme value statistics applied to the understanding of extreme wave conditions in the North Sea. Looked into new methods for estimating the parameters of extreme value distributions using splines.
  • Lancaster University
    Research Intern
    Lancaster University Jul 2010 - Sep 2010
    Stor-I Doctoral Training Center
Experience working in Lancaster University's vibrant research environment in maths and statistics. I worked along side a PhD student on the classic operational research problem of facility layout. Specifically, we looked for visual patterns in the optimal layout of machines on a factory floor. My main contribution was code which automated the process of visualizing solutions by converting binary, tabular model output into factory-floor diagrams.
