About Emma Singleton

Following my studies in anthropology and environmental studies, I hope to enter the world of sustainability and environmental work. I am seeking roles that work to improve the relationship between humans and the Earth.Composting is my passion. I worked for three years as a Compost Intern at Wesleyan University's Sustainability Office, where I acted on a team to divert our campus's food waste toward sustainable and renewable disposal, as well as educate the campus on composting and food waste reduction. Over that time, composting became an integral part of my life; an act that brings joy and peace to my own mind, immeasurable benefits to the Earth, and positive change to my community. I hope to follow my passion beyond college and join the field of organic waste management to continue making a positive impact on the Earth and my community.I am currently continuing tofollow my passion for sustainable waste management as a team member at the Community Compost Company in Hudson County, New Jersey.

Outreach And Sales Coordinator / Driver

Hoboken, New Jersey, United States

The Community Compost Company works to create a circular economy of food production and consumption in the Hudson Valley of New York and New Jersey. As part of the driving team in New Jersey, I collect food waste across Hudson County from commercial clients, residential clients, and public drop spots. As the Outreach Assistant, I provide support for the expansion of CCC's program through sales efforts, events, newsletters, speaking engagements, and social media. My posts on our company Instagram and my writing for our quarterly newsletter expand visibility for our program, raise awareness about issues such as contamination in our compost bins, and boost morale for our customers who are working hard with us to help the Earth by diverting their food waste. I coordinate the outreach and onboarding of new customers and also provide support for our existing residential, commercial, and municipal clients.

Intern

United States

The USCC is a national, non-profit trade and professional organization promoting the recycling of organic materials through composting. The USCC promotes its mission by encouraging, supporting and performing compost related research, promoting best management practices, establishing standards, educating professionals and the public about the benefits of composting and compost utilization, enhancing compost product quality, and developing training materials for composters and markets for compost products. As an intern I work primarily on USCC's outreach initiatives. My primary project is creating outreach campaigns to promote USCC's slew of tools and resources geared toward helping composters grow and thrive. I also assist with USCC's Legislative and Environmental Affairs Committee (LEAC), which works on creating positioning statements about various hot-button topics within the composting industry. Ultimately, I will help gather the results of the LEAC working group into "The Composters' Voice": a positioning statement and policy recommendation on current issues affecting composting in the US.

Zero Waste Island Intern

New York, New York, United States

Earth Matter NY's Zero Waste Island initiative is a collaboration with the Trust for Governors Island that creates and maintains plans to ensure Governors Island is and remains a "zero waste island." As a ZWI Intern, I helped ensure that all vendors and events complied to the mandates: that they separate their organic waste and use only compostable serviceware, and send this material all to Earth Matter's site for composting. In addition to daily sorting of the compostable waste stream to remove any contaminants, the work I participated in during the ZWI Internship helped me grow my skills as a well-rounded member of the compost field. First and foremost, I learned the fundamentals of building compost piles and creating healthy, nutritious compost. During open hours at Earth Matter's Compost Learning Center, I engaged Island visitors about the work we were doing, the importance of composting, and the different ways they could incorporate composting into their daily lives. My intern cohort also conducted compostability experiments on fabrics and compostable plastic products, to contribute to the bank of knowledge informing the compost industry. And finally, I participated in a waste audit of one of the Island's waste stations. This audit's goal was to identify the rate of organic waste capture at this station, and use that data to inform or rearanging of the station to promote higher capture rates.
