About Emma Thacker
As a member of the British Psychological Society, I work towards providing a better holistic foundation of Mental Health care in the community, society and globally, primarily to provide a voice of advocacy for clients, across all sectors. Social integration, early interventions and the application of cognitive strategies, together with a balance of healthy lifestyle choices work well in reducing a vast number of negative aspects of mental health, and can further reduce the need for costly medications, incarceration and long-term support in the future. Signposting to, and supporting to engage with agencies to provide these services on a personal level is key in ensuring that the client receives the best support possible, without the need to fully rely on expensive NHS treatments, engage in the criminal justice system, or often debilitating wait times.Having worked in the Social Care industry for over 20 years, my interest in Mental Health and Behaviour was explored; personality types, and the effect that Mental Health and Clinical Disorders have on crime in society. I have gained BSc (hon) in Psychology, and became interested in, and working towards, raising Mental Health awareness, contributing to reducing discrimination across society. An additional MSc in Forensic Psychology has highlighted the importance in future crime prevention in children from areas of high socioeconomic depravation, and continuing work within schools has reinforced how crucial it is to maintain children’s mental health; raising cognitive social abilities to nurture self-esteem and self-confidence, and reducing negative affect, which then correlates with reducing anti-social behaviours. As a member of the Forensic and Investigative Research Team and CeBSAP at Sheffield Hallam University, I continue to contribute academic literature and the practical application of my research to children and young adults. Additionally, for the past 4 years and as a member of the HEA Fellowship, I also lecture students at both BSc and MSc levels in both Psychology and Criminology, specialising in Forensic Psychology and Forensic Mental Health.
