I’m an innovative, pragmatic, and driven professional with a life sciences background who enjoys leading a fantastic team of creative professionals.I’ve not had the most traditional of routes to get here, but it’s been a rewarding journey. After spending most of my teenage years covered in animal bedding (and other, less pleasant stuff), I went to Bristol Vet School. Whilst there I (eventually) realised that the aspects of the training I most enjoyed were the scientific puzzle and being able to work with and help people. After vet school I carried on with academia, completing my PhD, which satisfied the scientific puzzle side of things, but I didn’t get to do as much of the “people” stuff as I wanted, despite volunteering in various capacities around science communication. So, after completing my PhD I started looking further afield for jobs that would allow me to use my scientific knowledge and training in a new way.That’s when I discovered BrightCarbon, where I started as a Communication Consultant. I enjoyed the challenge of making (mostly life sciences) content engaging and easy to understand. I have since progressed to Managing Consultant and whilst I still enjoy solving the occasional data visualisation puzzle, I love my current role. I get great satisfaction from helping clients and from coaching my team to be the best they can.I’ve been described as approachable, supportive, and “a motivator” by colleagues and I believe these attributes help me manage others and lead a cohesive, engaged, and positive team.I’m very lucky that BrightCarbon’s remote working policy means I’m able to balance my fulfilling career around my family and volunteering commitments. My instructional design skills are now commonly used to help a local group of 6–8-year-olds learn through play. This often tests my people management skills too! And, of course, my young children have become adept at creating PowerPoint/Google Slides presentations, even if they do tend to overuse the glittery pens and the more unusual slide transitions!
