Student AttorneyUniversity Of Maryland Post Conviction & Resentencing Clinic Jan 2022 - May 2023During my 3E and 4E years, I worked three semesters as a Student Attorney in the Post-Conviction and Resentencing Clinic. Despite my primary academic focus on Business / Corporate Law, I intentionally chose a Clinic in the criminal space to expose myself to new perspectives.During my initial semester, I collaborated with an incarcerated client to draft and file a Motion for Reduction of Sentence under the Juvenile Restoration Act. This involved conducting numerous interviews, extensive legal research, and consolidating key statements into executable affidavits. I also collaborated with the University of Maryland School of Social Work to craft a comprehensive release plan for my client post-incarceration.My dedication and contributions led to an invitation to return for an additional two semesters as a Clinic II student. In the fall semester, I actively participated in Legislative Advocacy Meetings with organizations such as the ACLU, Justice Project, and the Office of the Public Defender, tracking legislative movements concerning parolees and engaging in discussions on upcoming lobbying efforts related to criminal justice reform.During the subsequent spring semester, I took on the role of overseeing and guiding a student team in drafting and filing the Motion for a new, incarcerated client. My responsibilities included client intake, prison visits, and relevant record requests. Additionally, I conducted house visits and phone interviews, assisting my student team in consolidating discussions into affidavits and letters of support filed alongside the Motion. This comprehensive experience not only enhanced my legal skills but also deepened my understanding of the intricate intersection of law, advocacy, and criminal justice reform.
