Profile bio

About Emma Whiteacre

I am an experienced analyst combining a long focus on political and economic risk in emerging markets with sustainability and climate change expertise - highly complementary focuses to support sovereign risk analysis and ESG integration and engagement for investment managers. I have recently passed CFA UK’s Certificate in Climate and Investing. I am also a Trustee on the Board of Renewable World, a fantastic charity that works to deliver clean energy and sanitation in poor rural communities, and to tackle the causes and impacts of climate change. Prior to joining BlueBay I was a country risk analyst, providing actionable insights on international trade and investment transactions for Beazley's political risk and trade credit underwriters. I have previously also held positions on the Steering Committee of the London Intelligence Forum of geopolitical and threat intelligence analysts, and as the chair of Beazley's Responsible Business Committee, overseeing the company's Environment, Charity, Community and Marketplace workstreams. I have also worked for Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership as a researcher, where I have also been awarded a certificate in Business Sustainability Leadership.

Listed skills include Emerging Markets.

Director, Sovereigns And Insurance

Current

In this role I’m on a mission to support investors and insurers with ESG integration and engagement, delivering decision-useful research and insights driven by Verisk Maplecroft’s extensive data and analytics capabilities. Our *award-winnjng* Sovereign ESG Ratings provide a rich source of information across every element of E, S and G considerations and my role is to mine the data and bring them to life for the sovereign investment community, to help identify the risks and opportunities that this additional lens can present. And at the same time the insurance industry is grappling with what ESG really means for them, so I am here to shed a little light on its risk, reputation and regulatory implications, all underpinned by solid data.

Jan 2023 - Present

Senior Esg Analyst

The BlueBay ESG team is industry-leading and highly respected. I worked with them as a senior analyst with responsibilities for integrating ESG into the investment process, and with a particular focus on climate change and sovereigns, as well as a sectoral focus on energy, mining, transport and heavy industrials. I worked on integrating climate change into portfolio management and developing Net Zero-aligned investment products, and internal climate change awareness raising. Additionally I co-led a working group on the transition of BlueBay’s emerging markets funds to Article 8 (i.e promoting ESG characteristics) under the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation. I worked closely with portfolio managers and analysts on engagements, particularly on the EM side, including both multilateral collaborations (eg through the PRI) and bilateral relationships with companies including Embraer, Braskem and Pemex. While with BlueBay I qualified for CFA UK’s Certificate in Climate and Investing.

Jul 2021 - Jun 2022

Researcher, Sustainable Business - Secondment

Cambridge, England, United Kingdom

Part-time secondment during which I undertook detailed research to develop a framework for excellence in business sustainability practices, analysing progress across four pillars: zero carbon; nature positive and biodiversity; circular economy; and social inclusion.

Sep 2020 - Jul 2021

Country Risk Analyst

Provided expert guidance to political risk and trade credit underwriters on political, economic, financial and social conditions in all countries, predominantly emerging markets, facilitating underwriting broad spectrum of perils including expropriation, nationalisation, sovereign default, currency inconvertibility, contract frustration, political violence, as well as support to cargo and marine teams. Advised on both macro level and transaction specific risks, and aggregate exposure across the portfolio, assessing default and loss risks. Created and maintained sovereign risk ratings model for all countries, and devised realistic disaster scenarios to assess systemic risks to book from sweeping change (political turmoil, social conflict, sovereign debt default, economic crises etc). Produced quarterly Global Economic Outlook for executive committee. Also served as the Chair of Beazley’s Responsible Business Committee for two years, and as co-lead of its Marketplace (business sustainability) efforts for three years before that. This included representing Beazley on the Lloyd’s market’s Disaster Risk Facility, and on ClimateWise, the insurance industry’s climate impacts monitoring framework, which we aligned to the recommendations of the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures.
