As a college graduate, I'm frequently asked what I studied in school by friends, family, and coworkers. The answer is -- it's complicated. My degree is officially a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with minors in Interdisciplinary Studies and Spanish. That doesn't tell you a lot.It doesn't tell you that I started college studying microbiology with the intention of joining the medical field. Or that I fell in love with the women's studies department after interning at the Women's Resource Center on campus and worked there for my last two years of college. It also doesn't explain that my minor in interdisciplinary studies was due to my membership in SDSU's Weber Honors College. It doesn't tell you that the reason I changed my major was because I believed I could have a greater impact on my community with a well-rounded education in both the humanities and sciences. However, I usually just tell them that I studied three different subjects under one major: biology, women's studies, and public health with a minor in Spanish.Following graduation, I spent a year working with the San Diego Promise Zone as their first operations associate. That was where I solidified my interest in operations and project management.Fast forward to today, I live in London and work for the luxury department store Liberty London, selling high end fabrics and haberdashery items.
