Hi There! I'm Emma and I'm a climate-focused architectural designer, researcher and educator. My interests and expertise address climate regeneration through the application of nature-based solutions and circular economy principles.I have worked at Queen's University, Belfast (QUB) since 2017, culminating in over 6 years of experience in architectural research and education and 14 years in the field of architecture and urbanism. Currently, I'm a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Architecture department at QUB. In this role, I work on the EU Horizon 2020-funded project 'UPSURGE', which addresses air pollution and urban resilience through the implementation of nature-based solutions in five European demonstration sites. I help manage the co-creation engagement strategy through the design and facilitation of co-design workshops as well as the development of urban design proposals for the project. I am also a work package co-lead and co-investigator on the AHRC-funded Future Island-Island project. Our team is focused on boosting regenerative design skills and building a regenerative designer ecosystem across these islands. In a previous research project, I worked closely with commercial agri-food partners to develop a net-zero, climate-transition strategy through carbon accounting, data insight, input-output analysis, visualisation, scenario-building, road mapping, and architectural design. My PhD research applied similar methodologies to unpack and reimagine the future of supermarket shopping. In 2021, I disseminated one of the key ideas around circularity in a TEDx talk called 'Can bees help us to design sustainable supermarkets'.When I'm not researching, I teach Architecture at Queen’s University. In the 2021/2022 year, I worked within the Architecture coordination team to design and deliver the Stage 1 program.I'm also a Co-Founder of Urban Input/Output, a multi-disciplinary collective for circular economy design-research. Since setting up, we have exhibited at the Design Museum and NI Science Festival, hosted a Circular Food Campus design sprint with Atlantic TU and been invited to several lectures across Europe.Prior to transitioning into the world of architectural design, research and education, I spent three years as an Architectural Assistant (Part I & II) in a range of architectural practices in Belfast and Luxembourg.

This project is funded internally at QUB to enhance international research networks and funding opportunities. Through existing and new networks, our project explores the role of shrimp in global protein and nutrient supply, as one of just four internationally traded blue foods. We have explored the challenges faced by the industry to build climate, supply chain, economic and disease resilience and are exploring how different measures mix and be implemented to help shrimp farmers build more resilient operations. Mar 22 - Present: UPSURGE projectI currently work on the EU Horizon 2020-funded project which addresses air pollution and urban resilience through the implementation of nature-based solutions in five European demonstration sites. Working in a multi-disciplinary team including a poultry integrator, housing contractor, animal welfare experts and architectural design researchers, I led in the development of a net-zero, climate-transition strategy through carbon accounting, data insight, input-output analysis, visualisation, scenario-building, road mapping, and architectural design.
