K-8 Art Teacher
CurrentStudent Teacher
I was able to spend time observing students grades 6-12 to see what their interests and skill levels were, then plan, create, and carry out lessons involving Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Lightroom, as well as basic photography skills using DSLR cameras. Teaching at a school so heavily focused on technology was a good fit for me after taking several digital media courses at Penn State that used the programs and skills aforementioned, as well as Adobe Aftereffects, Adobe Muse, and HTML/CSS web design.
Student Teacher
While learning from and observing the primary and intermediate teachers at the progressive lab school, I am also preparing multiple lessons and curricular units for K-5 during my 8-week stay.
Preschool Teacher
As part of the course AED489, I created an 8-week long curriculum for 15 preschool students that met each Saturday for 2 hours to explore art. This program, titled Saturday Art School, required extensive written work to outline the curriculum, as well as 12+ hours of outside work from teachers to rearrange and set up classrooms at the beginning and end of each Saturday class, and it was important to maintain positive relationships with families of students. The 8 weeks culminated in an exhibition at Zoller Gallery on Penn State's campus where all of the student work was on display, with curatorial input from the preschool students. A reception was held where families could come and see their children's work in a professional art setting.
Early Childhood Atelierista
Under the direction of Dr. Schulte, I was able to intern and take on the role of the in-residence art teacher, or atelierista, at a childcare center on Penn State's campus. I redesigned the art studio, wrote reflections that were shared with families each week, and carried out long-term projects with the preschool students that emerged from their interests.
Elementary After School Program Teacher
I worked with other staff to care for 120+ students K-5 after school from 2:45-6:00, which included facilitating outdoor activities, organizing snack and group meetings, as well as responsibilities for creating and teaching hour-long classes that met weekly for 8-week rotations. Students were able to sign up for classes at the start of the rotation, and lessons written for them involved prep time and crafting materials outside of work hours.
Course Instructor And Office Assistant
I was able to teach adults affiliated with the university, while designing my classes independently and crafting new ways of teaching each semester. Classes I wrote and taught include watercolor, pen & ink, mixed media, abstract art, and large group step-by-step painting workshops.
Children'S Library Art Teacher
I was able to design and teach summer and winter vacation art programs at a public library, while also working with children involved in the library's other ongoing programs.
Diy Feature Writer And Pop Culture Blogger
I wrote articles and blog posts involving DIY projects and current events for the online publication made by and for women in college.
Student Representative Member
I was chosen to work for my last year of high school as the student member on the Board of Education. I reported on the current events going on at the seven schools in the district, which required me to meet with school administration regularly and prepare minutes to read at the weekly meetings which were open to the public and broadcasted on local television.
