Areas of focus: energy, telecommunications and agriculture I analyzed and tracked all legislation that passed through the Senate committees for Energy and Telecommunications and Agriculture. This consisted of writing briefs for each piece of Committee legislation, which contained a description of what the current status of the law is, the purpose of the legislation, and how it would change or impact the current law. I then made a recommendation on whether or not the legislation is good policy for New York. I also assisted member offices with drafting legislation, responding to constituent questions, and meeting with industry stakeholders regarding policy and legislation. This process required me to conduct extensive research and remain up-to-date on state and federal statutes and regulations pertaining to energy and agriculture.

As a legal intern with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York, I performed legal research into areas of immigration law and federal evidence, such as the unlawful reentry of deported aliens (8 U.S.C. 1326), the pleading requirements for establishing a ‘found-in’ offense (proving an illegal alien was found in the United States voluntarily), whether assault and battery against a police officer can be classified as a ‘crime of violence’ for purposes of deportation proceedings, and the use of a deported alien’s testimony at trial.

As a legal intern with the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), I gained substantive experience in federal administrative law by, among other things, drafting responses to two Federal Tort Claims Act (28 U.S.C. 1346) claims, drafting representation requests to the Department of Justice on behalf of the Secretary of DHS, and drafting memorandum to the General Counsel in relation to a number of legal issues my division was dealing with. I also researched federal statutes, regulations, and case law for a future project to re-execute the Coast Guard by-laws.
