In my postdoctoral research, I am investigating modifications of microtubule(MT)-based mechanisms important for faithful chromosome inheritance during female meiosis. I am using the experimentally tractable nematode C. elegans because it shares similar mechanisms of meiosis to those observed in humans. My research aims to understand how MT-based spindles during female meiosis are built and organized in the absence of centrosomes (structures that nucleate and organize MTs in mitosis and male meiosis) and how microtubule composition such as expression of different tubulin isotypes contribute to the success of this process. I employ a combination of various approaches, including genetics, genome engineering, and microscopy, to understand this problem. Because errors in female meiosis account for the largest proportion of birth defects and genetic disorders, I hope that addressing these questions will improve reproductive health.
