I am lucky enough to be able to build a close-knit team around a useful product. So what more could I ask for? Maybe to be able to share this chance... Maybe to give some ideas to others... to you? So I'm going for it...I see my role as CTO in two lights: on the one hand, to create a balanced working environment for my team; on the other hand, to give them the opportunity to create something they can be as proud of as the client will be satisfied with. 1) Having a fulfilled team is based on a balance between personal development and professional fulfilment. The best "symptom" of success you can have is the happy, serene faces of your team every morning. My tools are my ability to listen and understand (empathy), and a relationship based on trust and respect (benevolence). Be available and attentive, positive. Success will come when this mindset becomes the guiding thread of your team. The NY Times talks about the "psychological safety net" in its article "What Google Learned From Its Quest to Build the Perfect Team". 2) The direct result of this alchemy is the quality produced by your team. My role on this second point is to ensure that the problems are broken down as finely as possible: start simple, move forward by iteration, deliver quickly and often.

There was no SCRUM at all in the IT department (120 people), and everything was yet to be built. The curiosity of managers proved to be an amazing opportunity to introduce SCRUM in the existing processes. It allowed Emmanuel to set up workshop, pilots, coaching and training sessions in various projects. The expectancy of the developers proved to be a continuous source of energy for all the changes mentioned above. On a more practical point, Emmanuel set up the first SCRUM team at EPFL for his project. Preparing the replacement of EPFL institutional repository (Infoscience), while filling the technological and security gaps in the current application in the meanwhile became a priority for management. In this context, changes were welcomed and were mostly successful (roles, sprints, demo, retrospective, collaboration and communication with the clients, i.e. librarians). Aside from being PO for Infoscience, Emmanuel has stepped in as Scrum Master for the CMS project since May 2017. That involved identifying, gathering and organizing the team first and helping set up the definition of done, the usage of GitHub and Travis, to have a real delivery process and manage expectations on all parts.
