When I was young, I glued myself to the television to watch The Animal Planet to fulfill my infinite curiosity of animals. What I saw on-screen was so foreign compared to the urban neighborhood I was growing in; I never knew there were careers with animals I could pursue. During my junior year at Boston University, I was completely immersed in the vast biodiversity that populated the coasts, mountains, and tropical rainforests when I studied abroad in Ecuador. It was doing research there and seeing all of the beautiful wildlife that I realized that not only do I have the opportunity to work within this field, but also a responsibility as a human to give back to animal life in a world in which we are constantly taking away. Since graduating in 2017 I have further immersed myself into the animal world, becoming a wildlife rehabilitator, and shadowing veterinarians as they introduce me to the world of animal medicine. This is all while working various jobs in order to sustain myself financially as I attained this vital experience. In 2019 I decided I was prepared to finally pursue my career in animal medicine, and starting in January 2021, I will begin my veterinary journey at Ross University.

In 2019 I became a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, which allowed me to contribute more to the welfare of the local animals of CT. Part of that includes being more hands-on at the RBNC clinic, which led to an opportunity officially working for the center as a wildlife rehabilitator. During my position here, I have the responsibility of completely running the clinic, accepting injured wildlife and treating them with the hopes of re-releasing them. My responsibilities in this position include:-Performing a triage of any animal that gets brought into the clinic, evaluating the severity of the injuries, and then devising a treatment plan that will allow the animal to recover successfully. -Performing treatments that include: administering medication (both orally and subcutaneously), turtle shell repair, wing fracture repair, and wound management , among others. -Accepting orphaned mammals and avian species, handling and feeding them until they are old enough to be upgraded into an outdoor enclosure, and then subsequently releasing them. -Communicating with veterinary professionals to gain access to their depth of knowledge in animal medicine, perform necessary surgeries on patients in the clinic when needed, and to prescribe medication that may not be accessed by rehabilitators otherwise. -Communicating with the public on the importance of wildlife in the community, while stressing the proper methods of interacting with wildlife in a way that is neither invasive nor dangerous. This requires having all of the up-to-date knowledge on items that range from TVs and entertainment systems to Apple products and Smart Home technology. In addition to these daily tasks, I also am responsible to any revisions that may occur throughout the year, e.g. when the TV display wall must be updated and replaced to showcase current models that the store is selling. In 2019 I was given the role of "Learning Mentor", which was then revised in 2020 to "Target Trainer." With this role I was given the responsibility of training the new staff that has entered the department. In this training I not only have to introduce staff to the basics of working at Target, but also introduce them to the nuances and priorities of working in my department. The breadth of my work at this company is not fully reflected by this one department. During my time at this company I have also: -Worked special projects during an intensive remodel of the entire New Britain store. - Assisted in the stocking and organization of West Hartford store prior to its grand opening. -Worked in all departments of the store, adapting to the various roles that are needed to allow the store to thrive. -Worked in the General Merchandise department, which allowed me to replenish and organize items within the store floor, while also interacting with guests to help them shop as efficiently as possible. -Worked in the Fulfillment department, which allowed me to interact with a completely different part of the store, packaging and preparing orders that guests made online. This was especially important as people increasingly relied on online shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic. Show less -
