About Emma Roussel
My current role at the Office of the Public Advocate, within the Safeguarding, Inclusion and Volunteer Programs team, has given me the opportunity to connect with a network of passionate and engaged volunteers across the state. It is the connection with volunteers that I most appreciate about my role.Throughout my professional career so far, I have learnt by far the most from working in programs for people with cognitive impairments, both with the Department of Education and the Department of Justice and Community Safety. In 2020, I graduated from the University of Melbourne, having majored in Creative Writing and Editing and minoring in History. While studying I was fortunate enough to be the recipient of the Melbourne Global Languages Scholarship which allowed me to study at La Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia for an entire semester where I focused on learning Spanish and exploring the literary history of Latin America. Once I returned to Melbourne, I was awarded the Melbourne Arts Student Society Creative Writing Award for my short story Cold Feet, which explored the intersection between individuality and motherhood. In my personal life, I have learnt a great deal from volunteering. Back in my high school years I volunteered at Life with Barriers, tutoring students of newly-arrived refugee status in their after-school homework club program. More recently, I have joined the Arts and Cultural Advisory Committee for my local council. Together with our local Councillors and Mayor, we advise and provide consultation on arts projects, competitions and initiatives to promote and engage the arts within our community. My professional goals would likely engage all of the above, aiding the community, engaging the arts, and promoting the interests of marginalised and underrepresented community members. I would love to work in policy writing for at-risk and vulnerable members of the community, project work for Creative Victoria, and volunteer engagement across the entire public sector.
