I’m an experienced Chief Executive, Trustee, spokesperson, public speaker and activist. I’m versatile, having worked across a number of sectors, and have a strong track record of turning failing organisations or projects around, or building organisations from the ground up. As the first Chief Executive of Craft Scotland I built the charity from the ground up, securing international partnerships and delivering ground-breaking campaigns which had global impact within the sector. We hit our target of launching in the USA four years earlier than planned, and my team secured and delivered on the largest AmbITion grant for digital development in the arts. I can't accept the unacceptable. My integrity and my values are important to me and I am passionate about ensuring the safety of people in the workplace, particularly women. I founded Mother's Work, a campaign which supports women who have experienced maternity discrimination, and I support women who are being mistreated at work more generally. At Camphill Scotland I worked across social policy and influencing, supported the Covid19 response within the communities of people with learning disabilities, communications, workforce learning and engagement with networks across Camphill and third sector. I have worked in community engagement, arts and culture, sport, politics and social care to deliver real and lasting change. Partnerships and relationships are key to success and they bring energy to me and my work. As the Founder / Director of Change The Chat, I am building a social change movement which creates change through storytelling and critical conversations. I'm making whistleblowing cool and making non-disclosure agreements (NDA’s) history. I successfully made noise about the fact that there is little to no investment in ME research, and secured the issue as a political party's policy for the first time anywhere in the world. Others are now following. I struggle with "it's always been done this way", but will fight my way through crowds to work with the person who believes that they can change the world.Specialities: - Public speaking- Change - Human rights approach to organisations - Leadership- Charitable sector- Strategic and organisational planning- Campaigning- Community engagement - Funding- Team development- Whistleblowing

Interim Chief Executive OfficerLiberal Democrats Sep 2019 - May 2020Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom(Do not work for these people)I led the day-to-day operations for the party administration and directed human, financial and administrative resources of the Party. As someone who is #Upfront in relation to women's safety and worker's rights, it's important for me to stress that this role was deeply awful. I witnessed and experienced many traumatic incidents that are unacceptable for a 21st century workplace, including a physical assault and some abhorrent practices in relation to HR and mental health support. The complaints process was patriarchal, archaic and torturous. There is no doubt that this experience has taught me a lot and has given me skills that have made me a more responsible citizen and a more sought after CEO.- Worked with the Treasurer to ensure the Party’s finances were on a sound footing. Not only did I have to account for a snap general election whilst in post, the leadership insisted on treating staff so poorly that the budget was constantly hit by legal costs for non-disclosure agreements - Managed ‘business as usual’ during the snap General Election in 2019- Supported the team through a number of crises- Negotiated with London HQ so that Scottish staff could access the same mental health services that staff in London enjoyed, introduced an office cleaner and upgraded printing technology, which had been in place since the 90's, to take some pressure of the campaigns team- Developed a mental health plan for staff and volunteers across Scotland, in conjunction with Pastoral Care in London HQ- Finalised contracts for staff who had been refused their contract once in post #MeToo- I was asked to deliver a change management programme. When I uncovered issues around safeguarding and child protection, which the party refused to deal with, I became a whistleblower. I now work with political parties across the UK to make them safe spaces for everyone -

Chief ExecutiveCraft Scotland Sep 2008 - May 2014Edinburgh, ScotlandI was appointed as Chief Executive (and the first member of staff) at Craft Scotland in September 2008, and was given just twelve months to revive a failing Scottish Arts Council project into a viable organisation. Within three years I had created a national audience development agency for Scottish craft, representing more than 2,300 crafts businesses across Scotland and internationally. My role included providing leadership for both Craft Scotland and the craft sector; developing and executing the business strategy; identifying and creating income streams; negotiating and pitching for contracts and opportunities both in the UK and in the USA; and achieving funding goals. In the later stages of this role I worked closely with the Scottish Government office in Washington DC and acted as a cultural ambassador for Scottish design at strategic events in the US. I also led stakeholder engagement and networking strategies, and managed the work of the organisation on a daily basis.I contributed to a variety of cultural fora including the Cultural Alliance and the Craft Sector Steering Group for Creative and Cultural Skills. -

Head Of EngagementArts About Manchester May 2006 - Sep 2008Manchester, United KingdomHeading up the Audience Development team at Arts About Manchester (now The Audience Agency), I managed the audience engagement portfolio for almost 60 member organisations. Working with some of the UK's leading arts institutions including The Manchester Museum, Cornerhouse, Bridgewater Hall, Royal Exchange Theatre and Whitworth Art Gallery, I consulted on audience participation strategies and led cross-venue marketing campaigns. I also delivered board training and development sessions.Notable campaigns include:Revealing Histories: Remembering Slavery, the Greater Manchester response to the Bicentenary of the Abolition of the British Slave Trade Act. I worked with eight arts institutions across Greater Manchester and members of the public directly affected by the subject.During the In Touch campaign, my team worked collaboratively with deaf and disabled people, disability-led organisations and arts institutions. The campaign changed outdated practices within arts organisations, making them accessible and equal for all people to both visit and work in.With Open City, I devised a campaign which introduced non-arts attenders to the arts. The scheme united volunteers with community groups who then negotiated deals and events for the group. The scheme has now also been replicated in Liverpool. After a pilot with the Royal Northern College of Music, I launched a mystery shoppers scheme with members of the public from all backgrounds.

Marketing AssistantRoyal Exchange Theatre Sep 2002 - Jun 2003Manchester, United Kingdom -
Box Office Supervisor/Marketing AssistantWest Yorkshire Playhouse Sep 1999 - Sep 2002I joined West Yorkshire Playhouse as Box Office Assistant whilst also studying full-time at university. After an initial period of working part time, I was quickly promoted to a full-time position of Box Office Supervisor which I successfully balanced with my degree studies. I managed a team of 18 staff, provided daily and weekly financial reports to the Senior Management Team and worked with colleagues to improve performance across the department. During this time the Box Office broke sales records and targets on a regular basis. With a keen enthusiasm for understanding the various communication roles within a venue, I also worked one day each week in the press office as a volunteer assistant to the press team. This resulted in a salaried position in the marketing team, sponsored by Arts Council England's New Audience fund, which I took upon graduation. I led on strategies to encourage closer working between the marketing team and the Box Office, achieving all targets set. I also managed the Community Network scheme, an audience development project which continues to achieve an incredible level of engagement with the local community to this day (funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation).
