About Emmett Smith

My newest research project involves extracting ancient DNA from Icelandic soils. We are hoping to find evidence of what early Viking settlers in Iceland were eating, what livestock they brought with them, and with luck a bit of human sequence.I am interested in communicating scientific knowledge. I want to make science easily understandable and accessible for all people. There is an increasing need for genetic knowledge in the coming era of whole genome sequencing and its impact on human health. I am passionate about educating students so they may become smart, thoughtful scientists.Specialties: Abilities: Independent worker, Imaginative investigation, great communicatorTechniques: Western blot, Chromosome Conformation Capture (3C), Carbon Copy Chromosome Conformation Capture (5C), Yeast-one-hybrid, Data analysis, Soil microbiome, DNA extraction, Qiime2

My thesis research investigated the long-range control of the expression of the cystic fibrosis gene CFTR. CFTR is expressed differently throughout the tissues of the body. The promoter alone does not contain enough complexity to explain this cell-type specific gene expression. Therefore, I am investigating regions of the genome that create three-dimensional contacts with the CFTR promoter. Some of these regions act as enhancer elements of the gene, and only contact the promoter in cells which express CFTR. In cells which do not express CFTR these elements are not in contact with the promoter. I am currently using Chromosome Conformation Capture (3C), 3C-Carbon Copy (5C) and yeast-one-hybrid methods to identify these regulatory elements and the proteins that bind them.
  • Purdue University
    Undergraduate Research
    Purdue University May 2005 - May 2007
    Staiger Lab
As an undergraduate researcher, I assisted graduate students and post-doctoral students with their research, as well as investigated my own project. The lab's interests are in actin and actin binding proteins. I specifically investigated CapA and CapB in the model organism Arabidopsis Thaliana. I identified a mutant strain lacking these proteins and looked for phenotypes resulting from the mutations.
  • Seyet Llc
    Scientific Interpreter - Intern
    Seyet Llc May 2006 - Sep 2006
Purdue Research Park West Lafayette In
Seyet LLC makes informational videos regarding scientific products and techniques as well as videos depicting biological function. I worked as a scientific interpreter, coordinating with the programmers to ensure that the science was exact and the videos represented facts as closely as possible. I read primary literature and explained difficult topics to the programmers.
