As a Manufacturing Technical Lead, I was responsible for a team of 7 people and my main duties were to ensure the health and safety of my team at all times and maintaining a smooth workflow. This involved making sure Personal Protective Equipment standards were upheld, compiling and delivering toolbox talks regarding quality and safety, and troubleshooting on the shop floor. I learned to critically assess CNC programs, identify problem areas, and make recommendations to rectify the issues. After a period of time in the job, I identified several areas of our processes which could benefit from a Standard Operating Procedure, so I compiled Standard Operating Procedures for these areas which were then signed off by the company and are still in use today. The stand-out aspect of this job however, was when I was tasked with re-working a non-conformant part. In my own time, I taught myself conversational CNC programing which enabled me to create simple re-work programs at the machine, which, in partnership with another skilled machinist, saved the company over £300,000 in 6 months. It also enabled me to design and manufacture several jigs and fixtures to increase the efficiency and repeatability of some of the most commonly re-worked parts.

I was hired as a trainee CNC machinist with no previous knowledge or experience of CNC machining. I learned quickly however, and within a year was promoted to shift manager. In the first year I oversaw the expansion of the shift from 5 to 10 operators and helped it become the most productive shift in the company. As shift manager I regularly set up and operate 3, 4 and 5 axis Unisign and Takumi CNC milling machines with Siemens and Heidenhain controls. I have also worked with a variety of materials including aluminium, titanium, steel, wood and nylon. Other duties include proving out new programs, first part inspections (using verniers, micrometers, depth gauges, height gauges, bore micrometers, radius gauges, plug gauges, conductivity testers and radiowave probes), reading engineering drawings, creating/ editing programs at the machine, re-working parts, maintenance of machines and building/setting tools. I also have some basic experience with CMM machines and PC-DMIS software. My less hands-on managerial duties include ensuring production/OEE targets are met, creating shift reports, closely monitoring quality across the shift, performance reviews of employees and training new machinists.
