Profile bio

About Emmy Martin

Hello! I am a breaking news intern at POLITICO covering the 2024 election in Washington, D.C. this fall. While I am taking a semester off for the opportunity, I will return to Chapel Hill in the spring to complete my undergraduate degree in May.This summer, I interned at The News & Observer and reported on metro and political news. I previously was a member of the POLITICO Journalism Institute. Before that, I was the multiplatform editing intern at The Dallas Morning News. I also served as the 2023-2024 editor-in-chief of The Daily Tar Heel, UNC’s independent student-led newspaper. I directed breaking news coverage of the fatal on-campus shooting that left one professor dead in August 2023. The front page of the DTH's newspaper following the shooting went viral, gathering over 8 million views and leading to my invitation to the White House. I will graduate from UNC in 2025 with a B.A. in journalism and political science and a minor in information systems. I am also an Eve Carson scholar and an Honors Carolina scholar. I am honored to be a recipient of the 2024 Ernest H. Abernethy Prize in Student Publication Work from UNC, the 2024 Dan Rather Medals for News and Guts from the University of Texas at Austin, and the 2024 Edward J. Sullivan Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
