About Emory Edwards, Ph.D.

Everything can be improved with documented goals and a clear timeline. There's nothing like a Ph.D. to finally find confidence in yourself and your skills. Well-into adulthood I was the shy one. I would only take a leadership role or offer advice if it was asked of me, otherwise I would assume my contributions were unwanted. But six years of practicing research methods, learning to ask the right kind of questions, and becoming the ultimate expert in a topic that matters? It will do wonders for your self-confidence. These days, I find change exciting. Most people approach change with trepidation at best. When I use my skills in research and analysis to really get a good look at the 'who's, 'how's, and 'why's of change, I become a bird far above watching the change happening or a badger tunneling under it, shaping the groundwork to my liking. Instead of something scary, change becomes new information, interesting facts, it becomes data. And data are one of my favorite things.Data can mean different things to different people. In my case, I'll lose hours to tracking numbers, coding spreadsheet formulas, updating reports, and checking off to-do items. But I also love talking to people. A brilliant idea that's hidden in someone's off-hand comment or a personal anecdote is as much a piece of data as a number in a database. In fact, collecting people's words, analyzing them systematically, and finding the trends and similarities in what people want and need can be more valuable than ten times the raw data, if the latter comes without context or validation. There's one thing that's clear from both my academic research on volunteer-based crowdsourcing of accessibility and my professional experience running focus groups, interview studies, diary studies, and more with companies like Google, Microsoft and Intel. The golden rule of my career so far: there are few forces more powerful than the intelligence of a group harnessed for the advancement of a common goal.
