Principal Investigator: Space And Sustainability: Norms Of Behavior For Commercial Space Activities
CurrentSpace exploration is a complex, technical and expensive endeavor that traditionally has been the domain of big governments. However, advances in reusable rockets, lowered per-launch costs and miniaturization of satellites are opening up new business opportunities for a burgeoning commercial space industry. As more private sector entities develop extraterrestrial ambitions, the sustainability of space activities is increasingly at risk. The Leeds School of Business and the College of Engineering and Applied Science have embarked on a partnership in a program that focuses on the “Business of Space”.The project promises to bring together experts from the disparate communities of aerospace engineering, business, information technology, law and public policy to research and develop: (1) commercial space industry market analyses; (2) business models for the commercial space industry; (3) norms of behavior to address the issues of space sustainability and corporate social responsibility in achieving the SDGs; and (4) electives for the new CEAS space minor and executive education programming for the commercial space industry.

In the "idea economy," maintaining brand reputation is critical to success. Companies pay a steep price for any ethical or regulatory lapses. Therefore, senior leaders must leverage their E&C programs to maximize innovation and performance with integrity. At Haas, we have engineered an E&C program, "Leading with Ethics and Comliance," that goes beyond rules and regulations into the realm of competitive strategy. To gain the credibility to participate at a strategic level, E&C officers need to run their units as a business within a business—providing valuable services to the rest of the organization and proving that they can help drive growth within the framework of increased regulation and higher expectations of corporate responsibility. The Haas Program in Ethics and Compliance, "Leading with Ethics and Compliance," teaches E&C officers how to achieve strategic relevance by:1.Partnering with key decision makers to cultivate influence,2.Earning a reputation as a creative thinker intent on progress, not obstruction,3.Measuring how E&C improves the organization's ability to meet its corporate objectives.
